SEVEN THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING A PUPPY

We love our puppies, and as a principled licensed Kennel Club breeder of 10 years standing, I am always on the lookout for people who don’t share our high standards and are just in it for the money.

The internet is unfortunately a minefield, and anyone can pretend they are a responsible breeder.

But when you are buying a puppy how can you tell the difference and what should be red flag warnings you should steer clear of?

Here are seven things to look out for when buying a puppy:

  1. See the puppy in its own environment. Never buy from the back of a car or at a motorway service station – it might seem obvious, but this is a big giveaway that a puppy has been farmed and probably bred in appalling conditions.

  1. Be wary of duplication of pictures and numbers on various adverts. Stock pictures may be used by unscrupulous dealers and text might also have been lifted from others adverts throughout the internet.

  1. Is the puppy Kennel Club registered? – You can easily check by contacting the Kennel Club and asking the breeder to see original documents.

  1. Are there claims that a new-born puppy has been vaccinated? A puppy cannot be vaccinated before they’re four to six weeks old, so watch out for this.

  1. If there are claims that a puppy has a pet passport, chances are it has probably been imported.

  1. If the breeder tells you that you can’t see the puppy’s mother this is another red flag. If the mother is not there everything points to the puppy not being bred there.

  1. Don’t feel pressured into making a decision on the first visit. An authentic breeder understands that taking a puppy home is a major life decision and many people need time to decide.
